On Thursday and Friday of last week I had the privilege of attending Willow Creek Association’s Global Leadership Summit. I’m still processing a lot of what was said there but thought I would share some bits and pieces of it through a smattering of quotes from the incredible leaders I got to hear live.

  • Bill Hybels on leading a team: “Create an environment where we believe God can provide solutions to things that seem impossible.”
  • Len Schlessinger on entrepreneurship: “Failure means trying again with experience.” “Stop obsessing over what you need and think about what you have.”
  • Corey A. Booker, Mayor of Newark, NJ quoting Lincoln: “Everyone is born an original but most die a copy.”
  • Seth Godin: “If failure is not an option than neither is success.”
  • Steven Furtick: “If the size of the dream you have for your life (ministry) is not intimidating you it’s probably insulting to God.” “We’re insecure because we compare our behind the scenes with other people’s highlight reels.”
  • Wess Stafford: “This world is not our own, it’s a camp site we’re visiting.”
  • Mamma Maggie Gobran on the poor children in the trash heaps on the outskirts of Cairo: “Among them the Creator is hidden.” “True love is to give until it hurts.” “In silence we leave many to be with the One.”
  • Michele Rhee on making tough decisions: “I’d much rather deal with anger over apathy.”
  • Dr. Henry Cloud on leaders: “God has called you to be a steward of your vision.”
  • John Dickson on humility: “Expertise in one area counts very little in another.”
  • Patrick Lencioni on vulnerability as a leader: “There are massive rewards for being vulnerable but it requires suffering.”
